We arrived in your country on November 6 at the kind invitation of the Russian Railway Workers' Union, for which, on behalf of the entire delegation, I would like to express my most sincere gratitude.
We have always had a great interest in everything that happens in the Soviet Union, and I believe that this interest will grow more and more. Therefore, it is quite natural that each of us dreamed of getting acquainted with how Russian railway workers perform their tasks in conditions that, as we clearly understand, are associated with enormous difficulties caused by the enormous destruction of railways in the Soviet Union during World War II.
Not only we, the members of the delegation, but every member of our trade union understands perfectly well that the tasks that you faced after the end of the war were truly enormous. Indeed, to successfully solve these tasks, it was necessary for the people of your country to have the confidence and energy capable of moving mountains.
What struck us most was that, wherever. Wherever we were, we saw the great enthusiasm of the people who run any part of the railway industry. Their enthusiasm is boundless, and their confidence not only in their own abilities, but also in the creative abilities of those they are honored to lead, indicates the character of the people of your country.
We have seen the huge restoration work that has already been carried out not only on roads, but also in railway depots and the construction of new stations. The new railway station in Dnepropetrovsk is indeed an achievement that the builders can rightfully be proud of. When the new platforms are built and everything is completely finished, this station will undoubtedly be one of the best in the Soviet Union.
The centenary of the railway connecting Moscow and Leningrad was marked by the construction of a new hall at the Moscow Railway Station in Leningrad, which is truly an eye-pleasing structure. We were interested not only in the architecture of this lounge, but also in the conditions created there for passengers. We have seen wonderful buffets where you can get a hearty meal.
Wherever we met the workers, it was clear that they were really happy and satisfied with their work. In our opinion, the Railway Administration has taken very important measures to further improve the material living conditions of railway workers.
We had the pleasure of visiting some of the railway educational institutions where men and women under the age of 35 are trained in professions that open up the opportunity for them to hold responsible administrative positions. We have become familiar with the education system and the living conditions of the trainees, and we believe that all the prerequisites have been created here to achieve great and rapid success.
In the railway workshops and depots that we visited, we were struck by the organization of first aid in case of accidents and medical care, which show that you deeply understand the value of human health and consider it as the most important condition for achieving success. For example, the conditions of medical care at the Dnepropetrovsk car building plant are really at a very high level; the number of doctors and nurses working here leaves nothing to be desired. We have seen good business practices not only in the field of medical care, but also in the issue of living conditions, such as the organization of canteens. The canteens are very good, and we were particularly impressed that they have special menus for people who need a special diet.
