Poland under German-Soviet occupation during World War II

On September 22, 1939, when fighting was still going on in Poland, German and Soviet troops held a joint victory day parade in Brzeski on the Bug River. It was a symbolic seal of the defeat of Poland and the beginning of its occupation by two criminal regimes — the Third Reich and the USSR.

The winning countries effectively divided the spoils, first dividing Poland among themselves, and then carrying out internal administrative division at their discretion. The Germans incorporated some of the occupied territories that had belonged to Germany before 1918 directly into the Reich, while the rest became a quasi-autonomous state. The Soviets, in turn, incorporated the border territories into the Belarusian and Ukrainian Socialist Republics, transferring Vilnius to Lithuania... and returning it a year later, when the state was also absorbed by the USSR.

Both countries began their occupation with an attempt to eradicate all traces of Poles in the conquered territories. Both the Soviets and the Germans destroyed priceless monuments of Polish culture and art. A number of actions were carried out in the German occupation zones to arrest and kill Polish patriots and intellectuals (the so-called "intelligence actions", 1939-1943). In the USSR, a similar fate awaited Polish officers, doctors and lawyers captured in 1939, who were killed by the NKVD in 1939. Mass shootings took place in Katyn, Kharkov and Medny in the spring of 1940.

Both sides wanted, first of all, to turn Poles into cheap, obedient labor. The German occupation policy was aimed at "recovering" valuable racial material (by creating a so-called German National list for people with German roots), while the rest of the Poles were to become slaves in the short term and subsequently be killed. Jews who had lived in Poland since the beginning of the occupation were considered to be elements to be exterminated, and they were constantly being killed. And since 1940, ghettos and specially prepared death camps began to appear.

The Soviets, in turn, wanted to turn Poles into Soviet citizens, into cheap labor, officially "free", but in practice completely dark and devoted to the Communists. This was to be achieved through intensive propaganda, forced granting of Soviet citizenship, and for resisting families, deportation deep into the USSR or directly to labor camps beyond the Urals and Siberia. In both occupied areas, Poles were forced to work for the occupiers for free or almost for free. This process was especially intensified in the territory of the governorate, where, as a result of numerous raids, tens of thousands of Poles were enslaved to work in Germany. As a result of these actions, not only Polish culture, but also the very biological existence of the nation was in grave danger.
